Connecting to Holden

Establish a Key Concept from your reading of The Catcher in the Rye, and, in your own blog, discuss your connection to that key concept either through personal stories or connections through pop culture references or learned experiences. Explain how your connection helps you to understand about the character of Holden Caulfield or what Sallinger is communicating to you through your reading of this novel. Post your response, then comment on two other responses and leave a comment here to indicate that you are done. Please finish this by Thursday Feb. 11th.

  1. The key concept that I am connecting with is dealing with a loss at a young age. I believe that Salinger is demonstrating, through the actions and descriptions of Holden due to the loss of his bother Allie, that death is something very difficult for anyone to deal with, especially an angsty teen. The connection I have is that I lost both of my Grandpas from the time I was the ages of 16-19. Each died in a different way and one was very sudden and shocking to the family. I was looked upon as the oldest grandchild to hold it (no pun intended)together and be the strong one for my younger brother and sister, even though I was dealing with the pain and loss on a personal level myself.

Later I used those losses as a source of some of my creative writing pieces both in the form of stories and essays in my college classes. I connect with Holden because he kept something of Allie's, the mit, and also kept him in his thoughts and in his life. As we read, we will discover that a lot of the negative behaviors that Holden exudes, stem from his unresolved hurt and sorrow over his loss. I used my experiences as positive motivation, ultimately leading me to a place where I felt like I could impact the lives of other young people who might be dealing with any numbers of personal issues - teaching. So in that way, motivation through loss of a loved one at a young way, I can connect with Holden Caulfield.
